Maybe don't use partitions next time either -- just one drive since you only use it for one thing anyway. I have other files on it but had read that you can do a back up without erasing the other files. I need the info on the drive so cannot delete and start over. The Disk Wasn't Ejected Because One Or More Programs May Be Using It It's Spotlight, which is indexing your drive. It was mds, so then I did a "sudo killall mds" and was able to eject. I'd ask in their support forums.

Is it risky to force eject the drive when this is happening? Then disconnect. If you see any error messaging, it's probably due to the disk being busy from activity through an application, whether that's from a Time Machine backup or an app saving or I can access it and copy stuff from it, but obviously something is deeply wrong.
