I prefer image backup. An earlier restore point defeats the purpose. From the System Restore window (click Start, type System Restore, and press Enter to open it), select Choose a different restore point and click Next. Presto!

Did u try restoring and it failed or what? To run Windows in Safe Mode, restart your computer and press F8 (if you have Windows installed only). Safe mode don't work.
